Brief Overview

 

Sulphur has different shades of dyes but black is most extensively used dye in the textile industry. Sulphur black is available in both solid granular and flake form. The dyes are used on cellulosic through a reduction-oxidation process, where dyes are absorbed and oxidized. Oxidation causes the dye to be insoluble within the cellulosic and sets the dye. Sulphur black is black colored with slight reddish or greenish tone. They are used as the sulphur dye, synthetic organic dyes for cellulosic.

The different types of sulphur dyes available are

• Conventional water insoluble dyes

• Water soluble dyes

• Pre-reduced dyes, in the stabilized leuco compound form

Conventional water-insoluble dyes and water-soluble dyes are non-substantive to cellulosic whereas pre-reduced dyes are substantive to cellulosic

 



Manufacturing Process

 

Wet Fusion Process

Sulphur black is manufactured using a wet fusion process and the first step involves preparation of para-nitroso phenol, formed by reacting sodium nitrite with phenol in an acidic solution at extremely low temperatures. Secondly, preparation of colour base is made by condensation of para-nitroso phenol and ortho-toluidine in sulphuric acid solution at low temperatures. Upon completion, the mass is run into a dilute solution of soda ash and resultant precipitation of indo-phenol is filtered. Thirdly, sodium polysulfide is heated with sodium sulphide in solution and sulphur. The indo-phenol precipitate is added and dissolved in solution, and the resultant solution is allowed to reflux at a definite boiling point for a period of 12 – 100 hours until the reaction is completed. In the fourth step, the resultant solution is diluted and sulphur dye us precipitated from the sulphide solution by means of the acid. Lastly, the precipitated sulphur dye uses dried ground and standardized.



Textile Industry

 

Sulphur black is used as sulphur dye, synthetic organic dyes for cellulosic. Being water-insoluble in nature, they are reduced using weak alkaline such as sodium sulphide to form leuco compounds. These compounds are water-soluble and have a high affinity for cellulosic materials such as cotton, viscose, polyesters and polyamide fiber. They get absorbed onto cellulosic materials readily and are oxidized back to water-insoluble forms.
