Brief Overview

 

Soda ash light, also known as anhydrous sodium carbonate has a formula of Na2CO3. It is a white, anhydrous, odorless granular powder and is soluble in water, giving a strong alkaline aqueous solution. It is also hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, causing it to clump together. It exists mainly in its monohydrate form but there are decahydrate and heptahydrate forms.

Soda ash is made in two grades i.e. light and dense they have the different use in industries depending on their desired properties. All grades differ by physical properties like density, size, and shape but chemical properties are same. Soda ash light is mainly useful in detergent and textile industry. 

 

Manufacturing Process


Solvay process/ Ammonia-Soda process

In 1861, Belgian chemist Ernest Solvay developed Solvay process, a more efficient method to convert sodium chloride to soda ash light. In Solvay process, ammonia reacts with sodium chloride with the aid of calcium carbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is produced and it is then heated and converted to soda ash light.

 

Leblanc process

Invented by Nicolas Leblanc and named after him. This process involves two steps first heated with sodium chloride with sulphuric acid which produce sodium sulphate and hydrochloric acid. Sodium sulphate produced from step one is fused with limestone, coal which produces black ash and washed with water to ultimately give soda ash. This process is replaced by Solvay process which is more economical and less pollutant.

 

Trona purification process

Trona which is naturally occurring mineral ore of sodium carbonate i.e. soda ash has the formula of Na2CO3•NaHCO3•2H2O. Trona is used to extract soda ash which is gaining popularity because it is simpler than Solvay process. A various process is implemented to extract soda ash from Trona but among them, two processes are main first is Trona ore calcined to get soda ash and then purified. The Second one involves calcination of sodium sequicarbonate obtains from Trona ore.



Textile Industry

 

Soda ash light is used in dyeing and is added to ensure proper bonding of dye with cellulose fibers. This can be done before dyeing, after dyeing or to be mixed with the dye. It also aids in bleaching and is used during de-acidification of spun rayon, Tencel or hemp. In addition, it is used to increase the pH of the reaction because an ideal pH is required for the dyeing process.
